This is one of my favorite quick family meals when I don’t want to turn on the stove. It’s hearty, flavorful, and the rice cooker does all the work.

The secret is simple: the sauce goes in first — sweet bean paste, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and a touch of chili for spice — then add all your vegetables and chicken wings right on top. Mix everything well, press the regular Cook Ricebutton, and let the magic happen.

You don’t even need to add water — the chicken and veggies release enough moisture to cook everything perfectly. But if you like it extra saucy, add a cup of chicken stock or water before cooking. The result is tender chicken wings and vegetables coated in rich, glossy sauce — perfect over a bowl of hot rice.

It’s the kind of meal that tastes like a real home-cooked dish, but with zero frying, zero fuss, and just one rice cooker to clean up.

 Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs (about 680 g) chicken wings

  • 2 tbsp sweet bean paste (甜面酱)

  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 3 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tbsp chili sauce (optional, if you like it spicy)

  • 2 cups chopped potatoes (cut into big pieces)

  • 2 bell peppers, sliced

  • ½ onion, sliced

  • (Optional) 1 cup chicken stock or water if you prefer more sauce

Instructions

  1. In the rice cooker pot, add all the sauces first — sweet bean paste, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and chili sauce (if using).

  2. Add potatoes, bell peppers, onion, and chicken wings.

  3. Mix everything well until the chicken and vegetables are coated evenly in sauce.

  4. If you want more liquid, pour in 1 cup of chicken stock or water.

  5. Close the lid and select the regular Cook Rice setting.

  6. Let the rice cooker do its job! Once it switches to Keep Warm, let it rest for about 10 minutes before opening.

  7. Serve hot — it’s best enjoyed with a bowl of steamed rice to soak up all that flavorful sauce.

 Tips

  • No need to add water unless you want extra sauce, the chicken and vegetables release enough liquid while cooking. But add enough vegetables don't burn your rice cooker. Or just simply add some stock.

  • If you’re using an older rice cooker, you can press the Cook button again for an extra few minutes if the chicken needs more time.

  • This recipe is also great with mushrooms, zucchini, or carrots, use whatever vegetables you have at home!
